The Multi-Million Dollar Bend Project Breaks Ground in East Moline

Development on the multi-million dollar bend project on East Moline's riverfront breaks ground Thursday.

The former Case Plant property will now be a dual-branded Hyatt Hotel and Hyatt Place apartments, with the intent of rejuvenating East Moline's riverfront.

The East Moline City Council first approved the plans in December of 2016.

The $80 million project will consist of a 233 room hotel with 99 extended stay rooms and 134 overnight rooms, in addition to hundreds of new apartments all overlooking the Mississippi River.

Great River Bend Property Manager Mike VanDeHeede said the project has a unique location.

He hopes it will attract new tourism and jobs not only to East Moline but the entire QCA.

VanDeHeede believes more affordable living will attract younger, active people who want to be on the river in East Moline, making the Illinois side of the river just as competitive as the Iowa side.

"I think the impact of the community is going to be drawing people back to East Moline," VanDeHeede said. The beautiful river we have with the amenities like a Hyatt Hotel and like these nice restaurants that are coming in and this fun park we're going to have," he said.

"It will liven up the river front, and we're excited about that," said VanDeHeede.

Construction for the hotel will take about 14 to 16 months.

Construction for the apartments will kick off in about 30 to 60 days.

The entire project is expected to be complete by June of 2018.

The groundbreaking ceremony is set to start at 3 p.m. on Thursday on 12th Avenue and 55th Street in East Moline.
